UHLIG, Irene Else

May 24, 1931 – September 24, 2021

Passed away peacefully at Rockwood Terrace, Durham, in her 91st year.

Irene was born to the late Fritz and Else (nee Lüdicke) Lilienthal on May 24, 1931 in Rheydt, Germany. In 1952, at age 21, she immigrated to Canada to be with the love of her life, her then fiancé, Gert. She enjoyed farming with her husband and, after retiring from farm life, was active, participating in carpet bowling and shuffleboard at Grace United Church. She was a past member of the Grey-Bruce Singers, as well as an active member of St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Irene is survived by her children Margrit Uhlig (Frank Smith) of Turtleford, Saskatchewan, Klaus Uhlig (Deirdre Slowey) of Toronto, Lore Chuipka (Perry) of Wiarton, Werner Uhlig (Heather Reay) of White Cloud Island and Ellen Rumsey (David) of Hanover. Predeceased by her husband, Gert, and son, Peter, in 1965.

Oma is fondly remembered by grandchildren Brier, Kira, Tristan, Noel, Peter, Sydney, Serena (Adie), Kyle, Rachel (Matthew), Chelsea (Chad), Dylan (Alyssa), Justin (Kayle), Lauren (Kevin), Morgan, Erik and Gillian, and five great grandchildren. She will be missed by many, but especially her family and good friends Joyce, Lorraine and Joan.

Irene is survived by her brothers Dieter Lilienthal and Hans Fey in Germany, and sister Christel Weber of Waterloo. 

A Public Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Monday, September 27, 2021 from 11-11:45 am. As per COVID-19 mandates, masks are required indoors. A Private Family Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 27, 2021. The funeral service will be recorded and made available for viewing in the days following, posted on the funeral home website on her obituary page. Rev.  John Polacok officiating.  Interment in Hanover Cemetery, Hanover.

Memorial donations to the St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church or to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
