Gordon Long

Gordon Long

Gordon Elgin Long, of Hanover, passed away at Hanover and District Hospital on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.  He was 90.

Born on January 4, 1932, in Walkerville, Ontario, to the late Sydney and Ruby (nee Mantion) Long.  Many may remember Gord from his days working as a stationary engineer, and also his work in refrigeration and air conditioning. Gordon was a man who cherished his wife Nancy, and loved his family dearly. He lived a full life and was modest over his accomplishments. He was a volunteer, and an actor who loved the theatre. He was a motorcyclist, college instructor, author, and an avid reader. He and his wife loved to dance in their youth. He enjoyed travelling, photography, and possessed a great sense of humor. Gord was a deeply spiritual man who inspired his family through his divine faith.

Survived by children Kathaleen Atkinson of Hanover, David Long of Toronto, Ruth (Bob) Dimarco of Brampton, Marie Fong of Hanover, Steven Long of Brampton, and Anita Long of Sutton.  Missed by grandchildren Ryan Atkinson, Cassandra Atkinson, Krystal Long, Mary Long, Samantha Amanda, Christine Long, Justin Dart, and Kyle Dart, and several great grandchildren. Fondly remembered by sisters in-law June Pallin of Toronto, and Helen (Malcolm) Warner of Brampton, as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

As per Gord’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Public Memorial Service will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Saturday, June 18th, 2022, at 1 pm. Uncle Gordy always made me laugh and I loved him for it. Joyful laughter is an expression of love and I have been blessed by Gordy and Nancy's love these many years. I have many happy memories with uncle Gordy, aunt Nancy and our wonderful Long cousins at family reunions, the farm and other get-togethers. A great family - and we're glad they are ours - forever. Sending love to my cousins, with faith that Gordy and Nancy are together again, still sharing laughter and love with others.

Gord was a wonderful brother-in-law. In all the years I knew him, I always saw him enjoying life, loving my sister, Nancy, and their family, and reaching out to others. He was talented in so many ways: he wrote a wonderful autobiography, played music in a band, painted rooms with exactness, acted in plays, and was always fun to be with. One of his remarkable gifts was seeing the best in others. Recently he told me how much he missed Nancy and that she was the light of his life. It's good to know that they are together again. Much love to Kathy, David, Ruth and Marie and your families. He was so proud of you all, and so are we. Aunt Helen and Uncle Malcolm

From the membership of the Walkerton Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, our heartfelt condolences to the Long family. I had only known Gordon for a short period of time, and those interactions with him were well spent. He was humorous and spiritual, loving and kind, and very entertaining. His spirit will forever remain with me, our congregation, and all those who have been fortunate to meet his acquaintance.
May Gordon rest in peace, and may the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ be with each of you as you go through this time of grief and pain, to comfort and console, and speak peace to your souls/hearts.

Uncle Gordy was always engaged and fun when we were together. He greeted everyone enthusiastically and was great company. I loved the humour him and Aunt Nancy shared. I loved his pride of his family.
His outward kindness and welcoming nature will be missed.
My love goes to my cousins and all that were fortunate enough to know Gordy.
Love, Jill Pallin

Dan and I send our love to all our cousins in the Long family. It was always wonderful to visit Uncle Gordy because of his enthusiasm and interest in us. Although I don't recall which play we went to, I remember attending one of Uncle Gordy's performances and not having known that side of him was so impressed with his acting ability. He's a talented man with many accomplishments, not the least of which is his and Aunt Nancy's beautiful family. Cherish the happy memories dear cousins and trust that he has been welcomed by his sweetheart and other loved ones.
