Horst Mann

Horst Mann

Horst Heinrich Mann, of Hanover, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday morning, January 24, 2024, he was 84.

Born in Magdeburg Germany on June 26, 1939 to the late Herbert and Tatjana (nee Schindel) Mann, Horst and his family immigrated to Canada in 1956 where they setteled in Toronto.  He spent many years there learning various trades and making friends, this is also where he would meet his first wife Frances.  In 1977 they moved to Durham where they had purchased a farm, eventually raising their children in Neustadt.  Horst was well known around the Neustadt area for being the camera repairman, servicing regular folks as well as the local professional photographers from the area.  He could always be found tinkering away with computers or cameras, and he loved to capture moments and have memories for everyone to admire. He enjoyed driving bus for Kunkel’s and was happy to see kids off to learn every day. Upon retirement, he moved to his beloved country home where he spent 15 years; he called it Walhalla. He took great pride in caring for the land and gardens with his wife.

Survived by devoted wife Sylvia (nee Lampertsdoerfer) Mann of Hanover. Loved Papa of Monika Leroux and Andreas (Laura) Mann both of Hanover. Special "Apu" of Dale, Kaylah, Owen and Riley. Fondly remembered by his sister Ingrid Fitzner of Toronto and her children Karen (Max) Brugger and Christina Connolly and her children Ryan and Katie. Horst will be remembered by Frances’s siblings Kim Yuzwa and Gerry Yuzwa and their families. Predeceased by his parents, beloved first wife Frances, grandson Dale Leroux and by his brother Herbert.

Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Monday, January 29, 2024 from 10-10:45am, where a Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am. Family interment in Hanover Cemetery.

Memorial donations to the CNIB ( www.cnib.ca ) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

I am in deep shock to have just read the obituary for Horst Mann, someone my family knew many years ago as the husband of my dear friend Frances who was a friend from school, a Toronto Marlboro 'rink rat' with our friend Ann and myself, and a bridesmaid at my wedding in 1967 in Rexdale,ON. where we resided in our younger days. I was so happy to have been a bridesmaid at their wedding at a church along Kiping Ave in Rexdale a few years later. What wonderful times we shared together, whether with my husband Jim and our family at our home in Brampton, their apartment in the High Park area of Toronto, their home in Mississauga and then to the farm in Neustadt with all the pigs and other animals they were raising. Horst and Fran, with children Monie and Andres, were so very thrilled to be taking on this new adventure and challenge. I recall Horst as being such a hard-working, enthusiastic, happy and positive-thinking man who knew the inside of a camera well and enjoyed each task readily. He was a really nice and sincere person. My sincerest sympathies to Monika, Andreas, Gerry, Kim and all your families. To Sylvia, I am so sorry for your tremendous loss with Horst's passing and my sincere condolences to you and all your family. Take hold of all the wonderful, cherished memories you created together, to now share with family and friends.

As one of those "professional photographers" and camera store owner, I enjoyed a long and truly rewarding relationship with Horst over many years. His expertise and craftmanship were always accompanied with gentle humour and an easy smile.
