Ruth Mae Rehkopf

Ruth Mae Rehkopf

Ruth Mae Rehkopf, of Normanby Township, peacefully went to her Heavenly Home at Walkerton Hospital on Monday February 19, 2024 and was reunited with family and friends.

She was born on January 29, 1939 across the road from what would become her lifelong home at Lazy Maple Farm.

Beloved mother of Carolyn & Ken Kestner and Rob & Christine Rehkopf. Much loved grandmother of Shannon & Dennis Griem and Bryon and Kerry Kestner. Adored great-grandma of Madeline Griem and Kaylee Kestner. Proud honorary grandma of Charlotte Thomsen and Godmother of Grant Logie and Darlene Divers. Also survived by brother Gerald & Jean Horst and sister-in-law of Eileen Rehkopf.

Preceded by her parents Noah & Emeline (Hartman) Horst; her beloved husband, Aaron (2002); and family Lloyd & Marilyn Horst, Marvin & Marjorie (Horst) Losch, Hiram Rehkopf, Willard Rehkopf and Dan & Rose Rehkopf.

Ruthie Mae always had the welcome mat out for everyone. The farm was the gathering place and she could always make room for another person at the table. The pantry was always full with the fruits of her labors and her hard work in the gardens. Ruthie Mae helped feed the Neustadt Lions Club twice a month for 47 years, retiring only in 2022 when her health intervened. There are many people in our community and around the world, through the Operation Christmas Child program, who have been recipients of her handiwork, knitting, crocheting or quilting. Ruthie Mae loved music, singing in church, community and the Co-op Choirs. She was a woman of strong faith. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Neustadt, and the ELW and interchurch activities such as World Day of Prayer. Her passing will leave a huge hole in the life of many people.

Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – Neustadt on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 11 am. Spring interment in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the Neustadt Community Centre.

If so desired, donations in honor of Ruthie Mae to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Neustadt or the future Saugeen Hospice would be appreciated by the family.

Ruthie Mae may have left this world but she will live in our hearts forever.

For those unable to attend, the funeral service will be live streamed directly on the obituary page on our website, and through the Mighton Funeral Home YouTube Channel at: https://www.youtube.com/@MightonFuneralHomeLtd The live stream will start approximately 5 minutes prior to the service - at that time, please look for the live video post on the obituary page on our website or the Funeral Home YouTube Channel to join the service.  For people unable to join at the time of the service, the live stream video will remain posted and available for viewing afterwards.

Public Condolences

Ruthie Mae was a very memorable part of my childhood. My mother Alice Herman (nee Rehkopf) is related and because we lived just down the road and are family…we spent numerous days, dinners, occasions etc. at their farm. Her amazing meals and overwhelming hospitality is just how she was. A truly wonderful women and simply a treasure to everyone who knew her. She will be sorely missed and I send my deepest condolences to Caroline and Robbie and their entire families. God bless.

While we didn't know Ruth Mae personally we understand how much she was loved and how important she was to the Kestners.

We were welcomed to the farm and home of my Fathers ( Charles H. Rehkopf ) childhood best of times , fond memories he wanted to revisit late in life . We traveled to Hanover and were welcomed and all the family graciously attended . But the wonder of life was shared in song as the family sang around the piano played by Ruth Mae and delightful music filled the room and will be a treasure for me forever in my heart ❤️. Glad we celebrated life together in Joy . Glory to this beautiful life . Fondly , Jane

Where to begin? I have so many fond memories of Ruthie Mae! So many years of visits, dinners, baking Christmas cookies, making bead Christmas ornaments for the craft sales, time spent at the sugar shack, apple picking, potato picking, and so much more! But no matter what Ruthie Mae was doing, she always had time to visit and chat. I can still hear her laughter and will always remember her kindness.
My sincere condolences to Rob, Christine, Carolyn, Ken and families.

I will miss you Ruth Mae. I will never forget all those trips across the road to visit you and the family. It would be next to impossible to forget all the trips to your barn, the hours and hours spent in a hay mow together, sneaking fresh maple syrup from the evaporator, drinking hemlock tea, eating fresh pancakes and with the same newly finished maple syrup, and the countless evenings playing cards with you and your family. Your family was such a massive part of my childhood, and for that I will forever be grateful. Your house was also so welcoming and inviting. Rest in peace and know that you were loved.

My condolences to Rob, Christine, Carolyn and Ken. Your mother was truly a special person and will be missed greatly.

I'm sorry to hear bout Ruthie Mae's passing. I met her for the first time when I visited the family and farm in 2008. She always made me feel so welcome and she made the most amazing meals. Like my family, we were discussing what to prepare for dinner while we just finished lunch. She will truly be missed. Prayers to the Rehkopf family.

Ruthie was an absolute pleasure to have as a patient. Even at her worst, she was was so bright and always had a positive outlook on life! I swore she didn't have a bad bone in her body. We were able to connect our agricultural roots and love for gardening during her stay with us at St Mary's. She will be absolutely missed & forever remembered! She is one of the best patients!

Our deepest sympathies to Rob, Christine & families. I was always greeted with a smile and a helping hand when walking through the door and never walked out empty handed, either with one of her many delicious desserts & treats or casseroles. We would always exchange recipes and our latest cooking creations. I'll miss that ! We'll always miss the smiles and laughter. She was most certainly one of a kind .

Grandma's passing is, without a doubt, going to leave a hole in the lives of many that will never again be filled. Her love for her family - whether it be by blood or choice - was immeasurable, and I am proud to have been taught many skills by her that I will carry on to my own children.

Our sincerest condolences to all of Ruthie Mae's family. I got to know Ruthie Mae only about 8 years ago at the Neustadt Lions club meetings. Before the dinner I would often check in the kitchen with Ruthie Mae to see what we were having, and to see if she'd made enough ! She always had a smart comment back - she had a great sense of humour and loved to joke. And the dinners were all great - often she used products from her farm garden. I asked her once why we never had any desserts with peanut butter in them. About 2 meetings later, there it was, a lovely dessert with peanut butter lavishly incorporated. For numerous years this became the standard joke between her and myself, so every few months she would make up a specialty PB dessert and come out serve me directly at the table before the other members were served. Of course I got fined for that. Back in 2022, one entire club meeting was held specifically as a tribute to her, in her honour, celebrating the 47 years of making dinners for the club, twice a month. At that tribute I took great delight in reversing the role by making up a cake solely for her, a large stack of 7 different items each containing peanut butter. Her smile and laughter made it all worthwhile. She was a special lady, and I will have great memories of her.
