Cameron Henry Lorenz, a lifelong and proud resident of Hanover, passed away peacefully at Hanover & District Hospital on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the age of 73. Despite a steep decline in health due to dementia at the end of his life, Cam maintained a kindness and love for his family and friends.
Cam is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lani (nee Schmidt), who resides at Lake Rosalind, dear Dad to Lisa and Julia (Michael Alfano), and beloved Papa of Perry and Cameron Alfano.
Born on June 27, 1952, in Walkerton, Cam was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth (Ward) Lorenz. (He liked to tell the story that he was born in Walkerton because the Hanover Hospital had recently burned down!)
Over the course of his remarkable 43 year career at Smitty’s Fine Furniture, Cam held various positions, including part-owner. He worked tirelessly in every department, from delivery and sales to buying, payroll, Director of Operations, and ultimately, President. Despite his diverse roles, Cam humbly referred to himself as “Jack of all trades, but master of none.” He was a caring mentor to Smitty’s employees, and was affectionately referred to as “Mr. Health and Safety.”
In his free time, Cam was always keeping busy! He was an avid golfer, a passionate hockey player, and a skilled lawn mower at his beloved “Cedars” property. On Sundays, Cam would often take his girls to Smitty’s to play in the showroom, or out to the golf course to drive the cart. Cam also showcased his talent for building dry stone walls at each of his homes.
Cam’s athleticism and sportsmanship led to him being the first captain of the Hanover Barons hockey team, from 1969 to 1971. He also achieved success as a four- time Whispering Hills club champion or runner up spanning four decades from 1977 to 2002. His unwavering sportsman-like conduct earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and opponents alike.
Cam also loved to travel with his family and friends — of course, often bringing along his golf clubs.
Cam was a cherished brother to sisters, Marilyn Goodchild of Toronto, Brenda (Phil Litrenta) of Sarnia, and Janet of Ventura, California. He will be greatly missed by sisters-in-law Kathe Frazee and Angela Schmidt (Fr. Ed Wagner), and brother-in-law Alex Schmidt. He is fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Cam is predeceased by his parents and brothers-in-law, Doug Goodchild and Les Brown.
On Monday, July 28, 2025, from 2 - 4 PM, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Queen’s Bush Pub at 451 10th St, Hanover. Tributes will begin at 2:30 PM, so please bring your stories!
Cremation has taken place with a private family inurnment to be held in the fall at Hanover Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Hanover and District Hospital Foundation (https://www.hdhf.ca/donate) are greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.mightonfuneralhome.ca
