William Ryder Hughes

William Ryder Hughes

William Ryder Hughes
May 2, 1950 – October 23, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the family of William “Bill” Ryder Hughes announces his passing on October 23, 2025. Bill leaves behind his loving partner Elizabeth “Liz” McCormick, with whom he found happiness and companionship in his last few years. He will be dearly missed by his beloved children who he also considered his best friends: Andy (Karena), Lea (Rick), Jesse (Carly), and Joel (Alyson). He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Chase, Sierra, Hudson, Sydney, Ella, Ethan, and Ruth. Bill is predeceased by his grandson Noah and his beloved wife Hildred, who left us all too soon in 2019. He is lovingly grieved by his sisters Margaret (Keith) and Grace (Nils). Bill was predeceased by his parents William J. and Grace Hughes (née Ryder).

Bill was a loyal grandfather, father, brother, husband, and son who prioritized his family in everything he did. He was a tenacious life-long learner who excelled at any task he put his mind to: from horse racing in his younger years, to his Bachelor of Arts degree from Waterloo University, his Business degree from Brock University, and his celebrated 33-year career at Ontario Power Generation. Bill loved life and had many friends; he will be dearly missed at the curling rink, the golf course, and at the Bridge table with Gail. On any sunny afternoon near Lancaster Ontario, if you blinked you might miss him happily speeding down the highway on his favourite road bike. He was beloved by the local community for his wisdom and charm, and anyone who met Bill could easily see the passion, determination, and pride he brought to every aspect of his life.  His grandchildren will tell you how selfless and loving he was. His children will tell you they could always depend on him to pick up the phone whenever they called, no matter where he was or what he was doing. Bill had an infectious smile and a wonderful laugh; his sense of humour and welcoming presence were a true gift to all who knew him. His generosity of spirit and his kindness will continue to inspire the generations he leaves behind. He is truly irreplaceable to so many; his absence is deeply felt by all.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held in Spring. Memorial donations to Cornwall Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Munro & Morris Funeral Homes, Lancaster, 46 Oak St., Lancaster, Ont. K0C 1N0. Condolences may be made online at www.munromorris.com

Public Condolences

It has been many many years since I have seen Billy, Margaret and Grace. We were neighbours a very long time ago. I often wondered what happened as everyone moved on in their lives. My condolences to Margaret and Grace and to all of Bill's family.

Bill was an amazing man. He was a great Papa to his grandchildren. He was a great father-in-law as well. Always a smile on his face. He will definitely be missed. Prayers have been going out to his family in this difficult time.
