Luke Hawkins Edington
September 14, 1995 - February 7, 2026 at 30 years of age.
After many years of living with the agony of severe mental illness, Luke is now free and out of pain. He died peacefully and on his own terms.
Luke had a very close relationship with God and strove to serve the Lord faithfully, spreading light and truth and fighting the darkness.
He was a talented musician who was often heard playing his saxophone in Hamilton, North Vancouver or Whistler, British Columbia. He also played guitar, piano, sang and wrote many songs.
Luke enjoyed helping others and although he had little, he was relentless in sharing with those who had less. As much as the mental illness affected his mind, mood, decision making and relationships, it never changed his spirit. It never changed the core of who he was.
Although his heart was in British Columbia, for the last few years Luke settled in Hamilton and worked on his wellness. He made a huge effort to create friendships and community. He was active in his church and volunteered at the Cathedral Café and at De La Sol yoga studio in Hamilton. He also worked as a landscaper at Rainbows End. He was a gentle soul, who radiated love, kindness and acceptance.
Luke was highly intelligent and was always studying and learning. He was very open with his struggles and sought to raise awareness and help others with mental illness.
Luke is predeceased by his uncle Walter B Howard Hawkins, his 2 grandfathers Robert Findlay Edington and Thomas Sydney Hawkins and his dear friend Karina Smeds.
Luke will be missed by his parents Maggie and Bruce, his siblings Ian (Rezi), Emily (Carl Eastman), Chester (Leah Courtney) his nieces and nephews, Ada, Clara, Azier, Theodore, LaVerne, Howard and his newest niece arriving in April, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his 2 grandmothers, Marie Hawkins and Charlotte Edington.
Luke’s celebration of life will be held at Hope Community Church Hanover, Ontario on March 7th, 2026 at 11am with lunch at 12:30 and music to follow. Please bring your instruments and come ready to jam and/or enjoy the music. For those unable to attend, the service will be live streamed and available for viewing at luke.edington.ca/live OR at https://www.youtube.com/live/NAcCvYhONW4.
Luke’s remains will be interred at Holstein Cemetery Natural Burial Site, Holstein, Ontario on pastureland donated by a neighbouring farmer.

- Lynne McDougallI am devastated to hear this news. I am the kitchen coordinator at the Cathedral Cafe, a Luke often volunteered with me in the kitchen, I genuinely considered him to be a friend. I learned early on that Luke and I had a lot in common, both of our arms covered in hand poked tattoos. When I opened up to Luke about some of my own mental health struggles and my journey with bipolar 1, we quickly bonded over our experiences with psychosis and psych wards - it made me feel seen in a way that I never had been before. I then learned that Luke was a musician, and I shared my own music with him, which he listened to thoughtfully. Luke radiated kindness. It was always the hi-light of my summers day, walking down James st, and hearing his sax in front of vintage soul geek. Luke, you will be deeply missed.
- Chrisy HurnWe so valued Luke's presence here at the Cafe. Please know that we are upholding you all in our love and prayers.
- Tim DobbinSending my deepest condolences. I met Luke several years ago when he was friends with my daughter, Amanda, and Karina S. He was a warm and wonderful person and I can still see his smiling eyes and hear his warm laughter. There was always something about Luke that drew me in and he was warm enough to play along with whatever was going on. He was a true gem and I am deeply sorry for the loss of his bright mind, heart and smile.
