Alvin Collins

Alvin Collins

Alvin Collins passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital in London in his 87th year. Predeceased by his wife Mary Collins and grandson Liam McGeachy, Alvin was the father of Jeff Collins (Mary McGeachy) of Hanover, ON and Stacey Collins (Neil Thompson) of Vancouver, BC. Alvin was grandfather to Rowan Collins, Simon Collins, Alexandria Currie and great-grandfather to Nash Collins and Kip Collins.

Alvin is survived by his sister-in-law Darlene Collins of Rosetown, his sister-in-law Susan Nordean (Lyndon) of Calgary, his sister-in-law Mavis Matchett, life-long friend Barb Hoffos and several nieces and nephews.

Alvin was born on a grain farm in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on July 10, 1940. Alvin was an avid hockey player when he met his future wife Mary, who was a teacher in Rosetown. After Alvin attended university in Saskatoon to study pharmacy, the young couple moved to Ontario to pursue their careers and raise a family. Alvin worked as a pharmacist at Toronto General Hospital, eventually becoming Chief of Pharmacy there. He then took on the role of CEO of Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital and was instrumental in merging KW Hospital with Grand River Hospital. Prior to retirement, he worked as a consultant for the Ministry of Health in Long Term Care. Alvin was also very actively involved in United Way of Canada and eventually took on a role at a national level. In his retirement, Alvin enjoyed many trips to sunny destinations with his wife Mary. After her passing in 2024, he moved from Waterloo to Hanover, Ontario to be closer to family. He enjoyed live music and dinner nights with Jeff, Mary and their friends, as well as visits from his great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Village in Hanover for the excellent care he received there. They would also like to thank the Hanover Family Health Team (Candace Collins) as well as the staff at Victoria Hospital in London who took exceptional care of Alvin.

At Alvin’s request, cremation has taken place and a small, private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alvin may be made to the United Way of Canada.

Public Condolences

My thoughts are with Al's family - I remember him as a kind and generous man who welcomed me as a young person when I visited with his daughter Stacey. I will always remember the time I visited when Stacey was busy with schoolwork and Al picked me up at the train station then out for a beautiful meal and conversation until Stacey could join us. His generosity will always be how I remember him.
Hugs to the family

Dear Jeff, Mary and family,
I was so sorry to hear today of Al's passing. He and Mary made me so welcome when I visited Susan in Waterloo and we had such fun once when they visited the farm in Calgary. Al was so devoted to his family and I know you will miss him at Sunday dinners. You can celebrate his life now knowing that you were always there for him.
With love,
Lorna
