Gerald "Jerry" Kueneman

Gerald Bernard "Jerry" Kueneman, of Hanover, passed away peacefully at Hanover and District Hospital on Saturday, August 15, 2026. He was 90.

Born on March 14, 1936 to the late Albert and Mildred (nee Tilker) Kueneman. Jerry attended Holy Family School and Hanover District High School. While in High School he learned to play a trumpet under the direction of the former Frank Banks- During the next few years, Jerry played in 4 different bands and most significantly Frank Banks and his Orchestra. During the 50's he became a founding member of St. John's Ambulance, coached and managed several young hockey teams and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked at Knechtel's Furniture before becoming the Clerk for the Town of Hanover. He retired in 1992. Jerry was a "fixer" and his family often said that if he couldn’t fix it, it wasn’t worth keeping. From 1958-1968 Jerry and his wife Liz were the directors of the Hanover High School All Girl's Band. Under this direction the band won several awards including the Canadian Nationals and travelled as a guest marching band in Expo 67 in Montreal. His family was very important to him and he always tried to make things easier and better for his wife in her role as Mother and wife. To him the little things were important.

Remembered by his children Mark (Karen) Kueneman, Grace Ann (Todd) Clarke, Gregory (Carmen) Kueneman and Elaine (Rick) Brown. Loved papa of Patrick (Sam), April (Nick), Gillian (Kevin), Alex (Marco), Tricia (Curtis), Haley (Steven), Brady, Coty (April), Jacob (Jillian), Jocelyn and G-pa of Evelyn, Lyla, Frances, Jaylen, Madelyn, Peyton, Dante, Esme, Max, Tatum, Emersyn, Hallie and Boone. Remembered by his sister Glenda Ellig as well as the entire Schafer Family. Predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Elizabeth "Liz", and brother in law Walter Ellig.

Visitation will be held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover, on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 6-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Church on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 11:00 am. Father Kevin Upendran officiating. Inurnment of ashes in Holy Family Cemetery.

We had the privilege of being Jerry and Liz's next door neighbours from 2010 to 2020. Moving away from them wasn't easy as they were a constant in our lives and we couldn't have asked for better neighbours. I remember the day a wind storm took a tree down in their yard and they had to call us over to discuss all the damage it could have done. I think Jerry was a little disappointed he didn't have something to repair because of it. Any time I had a project in the back yard, he was there to lend a hand or wisdom. And the emails, he always sent emails around the holidays or any time he had a funny one to share. Our “inbox” won't be the same. We will miss you Jerry.

When we moved to Hanover in 1967, Jerry, Liz and their kids were our neighbors across the street on 12th Ave. Jerry and his family greeted us to the neighborhood and there was always a friendly wave and hello whenever we saw one another in our comings and goings. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences to the family.

I just loved Jerry and Liz. I was a trumpet player in the high-school band for all my high school days. It was a thrill to me to play at Expo 67 and lots of parades and sporting events. They were both so nice and encouraging. Later when I met them on street they always had a story to tell. Condolences to all the family.
